FAMILY DRUG GANG FACE REVENGE KILLING PROBE

Guardia arrest five just days after discovering body in burnt-out car

By Matthew Pritchard

THE GUARDIA Civil this week arrested five people in connection with the murder of a 33-year-old man.

Events began in the early hours last weekend when the emergency services were informed of a blazing vehicle on the A-92 road close to Gérgal, in the west of the province.

Once the flames had been put out, officers discovered the gruesome remains of a body on the back seat, subsequently identified as J.A.B.L, a man from the town of Viator, close to the provincial capital, who had been reported missing the day before. A post mortem examination revealed that the man had been shot in the chest. Traces of flammable liquids used to burn the vehicle were also discovered.

The Guardia Civil had previously found broken glass and blood at the man’s house while investigating his disappearance. A total of seven different addresses in Retamar, Níjar and the provincial capital were searched during the investigation and officers seized four shotguns and a 4.5mm pistol as well as flick knives, handcuffs, two kilos of hashish and nearly 40,000 euros in cash.

Within 48 hours officers had arrested five people, among them a 52-year-old woman.

Following questioning of the five detainees officers believe the murder was a revenge killing. Forty-one sacks of hashish – some 1,200 kilos – which the family was storing on a beach in the Levante region of the province had been stolen a month previously and it appears they blamed J.A.B.L for the theft. The Guardia Civil have announced they have evidence that incriminates all five.

The accused are thought to belong ‘Los Culebros’, an extended family crime organization with a long record of violence and drug smuggling. Family members are also being linked to a shoot-out in the capital city two years ago in which one man was killed. They are also suspected of being involved in an incident in 2003 in which smugglers opened fire on the Guardia Civil after they were caught bringing a consignment of drugs ashore close to the capital city.

A Guardia Civil spokesman called the investigation “exemplary”, although he admitted they were still unsure as to whether the murder was related to a similar incident which occurred in 2005 when the bodies of two people were discovered in a burnt-out car with German number plates close to where the vehicle was found this week.

These vehicles are specifically manufactured to be towed behind mobile homes. But some expats have encountered problems with the ‘boys in green’ when travelling. For full story, turn to page 3 of the printed edition.
