Easing into Autumn

The magazines and shops are now packed full with all the new looks and key trends that we should be embracing this autumn. However, here in Sunny Spain most of the new seasons’ fashions will make us extremely hot under the collar during September, as the temperatures here on the sunshine coast are not set to cool down just yet! I know you are all itching to revamp your summer wardrobe with some of the new season’s key pieces but that you want to do so without looking like a sweaty victim of fashion! So, I have trawled thought the catwalk reports and chose some new cool looks for you to partake in, until the true autumn weather is upon us and we can throw ourselves wholeheartedly into a newer warmer wardrobe!

Harem Trousers

These are the name given to the baggy trousers, with a tight and wide waistband, tapered hems, that can finish at any point between your knee and ankle, and saggy crutches. They have held a firm place on the Spanish market stalls for the past few seasons. Harem pants were hot in the 1980’s and featured regularly on the set of the Cosby show and in Five Stars music videos! They are now back with a vengeance this autumn, minus the matching 80’s style tuxedo jacket, and available in all different guises in all the high street stores. Harem Trousers appeared in the Autumn/Winter 2008 catwalks of many of the big fashion houses such as Marc Jacobs, Yves Saint Laurent and Louis Vuitton, but they were far from your jersey material copies found on our local markets! Fine tailoring is the key with these trousers this time around. The emphasis is on exaggerating the female shape to the extreme, with voluminous hips and narrow legs. They are great for giving shape to boyish/athletic frames and for hiding big hips and accentuating a small waist. Designer Alexander Wang says ‘they are to be worn by strong, confident women who aren’t afraid to experiment and think out of the box’.  If you fall into that category, your statement look needs to be teamed with a top that is close fitting, could be just a simple vest top for a day time chic approach or something a little more feminine with details such as ruffles or bows. Accessorise with a pair of chunky heels, a patent or leather handbag and a big chunky necklace or multiples of fine strands. The shorter styles of Harem trousers can easily be slipped into our wardrobe now and be worn easily by day or night. Then you can just add layers as the autumn months roll on.

Looking Lovely in Lace

Sophistication and sexiness needs to be on your mind when you are choosing your new lace items. Black lace dresses are the height of elegance this autumn and Prada, Chloe and Givenchy’s Autumn/Winter 2008 runway shows laid testimony to this. The lace trend is one that every age and shape of Costa Chica can play a part in and if you don’t have much call to wear a little black lace dress then opt for separates. Remember to keep accessories simple when wearing lace and you can give your lace look a more modern feel by teaming them with a pair of killer heels or shoe boots. Dorothy Perkins and Zara have numerous takes on the lace theme that echo that of the catwalk items at a fraction of the price!

Playful in Plaid

This stand out colourful trend is a follow on from the Spring/Summer 2008 Americana look. Your Plaid pattern, derived from Scottish thick woollen rugs and blankets, needs to be bold and colourful this season with a real retro feel to it. The catwalk shows of Just Cavalli, D&G and Chanel etc, took two different directions with their Plaid and tartan collections, so it’s up to your which road you want to go down; it’s either 1970’s bohemian cool, just popping to Portobello market look, or 1980’s punk, want to be Adam Ant’s number one fan! There doesn’t seem to be any rules to what you can wear your plaid pieces with, clashing colours and patterns is what it’s all about, you’ve just got to be confident enough to carry them off! The designers have ensured that their tartan and plaid designs come in many different hues and they have added a few grown up garments to their collections, so that all ages can be involved in this trend, strapless dresses, tailored jackets and blanket coats are all far from a stuffy weekend at Balmoral look, that you may have conjured up in your head! We can join the Tartan army now and add the hot pattern of the season into our wardrobes by choosing a lightweight shirt or skirt and then checked tights or dark denim flares can be added to them as we travel further into the season. If you are really feeling brave a voluminous dress or slim leg trousers in Plaid would be a daring ‘bang on trend’ purchase to make.

Two-in-one dresses

These are currently red carpet favourites and are now appearing in many high street store collections. They are dresses that appear to be a skirt and a separate top and are another trend that is easily accessible to all ages and sizes of Costa Chicas. The illusion of a high waisted skirt and tucked in blouse, which hugs in all the right places, gives the effect of the constantly desired hourglass silhouette. Two-in-one dresses are perfect office and business meeting attire. Choosing one with a softer structure and maybe a prom type skirt means a day dress can easily be accessorised to achieve a sassy evening look too.

Celebrity fashion quote of the week

“Don’t be into trends. Don’t make fashion own you, but you decide what you are, what you want to express by the way you dress and the way you live”
